Over the years I have become a big believer in good process. It isn’t enough to do right, we must do right in the right way. Good process fosters equity. Good organization fosters confidence and calm.
I love that we have a shared ministry and shared power in our congregations. The board, the congregation the staff and the minister all have areas of responsibility–often they overlap. They are all accountable to one another and the mission. Power and authority are woven throughout. This is such a unique model in our world. I reject the notion that congregations must be run like businesses, but instead this undertaking is a relational one.
Much of my interim work is to help build and implement structures and good process. Congregations are always in process, so it behooves us to feed and care for our processes. Congregational life is shifting quickly and old models no longer serve us well. This is a good time to experiment and reimagine.
